Congratulations Edward “Ed Dog” McGehee on your retirement
The men and women of the San Gabriel Police Officers’ Association would like to congratulate Ed McGehee on his retirement. Ed served the San Gabriel Community in different capacities for over 24 dedicated years. Ed started his law enforcement career with the San Gabriel Police Department February 3, 1992 as a Community Service Officer, where he found his penchant for issuing parking citations. A short time later, Ed decided that he wanted to become a police officer and attended the Rio Hondo Police Academy. On February 4, 1994, Ed was sworn in as a San Gabriel Police Officer.
As with all other new police officers, Ed worked patrol for the first part of his career. After gaining a considerable amount of patrol experience, Ed transferred to the detective bureau. Ed was assigned to the fraud and identity theft section of the detective bureau. After returning to the patrol division, Ed became a Field Training Officer (FTO). Ed was responsible for training many of the new police officer recruits that were hired by the police department. Ed was also a strong vocal proponent for the police officers association, and served the members in several different capacities. Most importantly, Ed served on numerous negotiations teams; where he worked diligently trying to negotiate the best contracts for the rank and file members of the police department. He never walked into negotiations unprepared for battle, and took personal pride in pursuing the best salaries and benefits he could for the membership.
After 24 years of service to the residents and businesses of San Gabriel, Ed decided that he had accomplished all that he could accomplish with the San Gabriel Police Department and made his decision to retire.
Ed had gained a reputation for being a, “Teller of Tales.” He has a penchant for telling colorful and wildly vivid stories, and his stories were always accompanied by character impersonations. No one can come close to following in his footsteps and his stories will be sorely missed.
Ed, we thank you for 24 years of friendship and brotherhood. Enjoy the next chapter in your life and don’t forget that you will always have a family here at the San Gabriel Police Department.
